Plate Heat Exchangers

Plate heat exchangers (PHEs) are a type of heat exchanger that uses metal plates to transfer heat between two fluids. They are a common type of heat exchanger and are used in a wide variety of applications, including:

How Plate Heat Exchangers Work

There are two main types of PHEs:

  • Gasketed plate heat exchangers: These PHEs use gaskets to seal the plates together. They are the most common type of PHE and are available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations.
  • Brazed plate heat exchangers: These PHEs use brazing to seal the plates together. They are more compact and efficient than gasketed PHEs, but they are also more expensive.
Types of Plate Heat Exchangers

PHEs work by passing two fluids through a series of corrugated plates. The corrugations increase the surface area of the plates, which allows for more efficient heat transfer. The fluids flow in a counter-current pattern, which means that they flow in opposite directions. This allows for the maximum amount of heat transfer between the two fluids.
